Title: Automation and Adjustment in Europe: A Comparative Study of the Robot Revolution

By Dr. Chinchih Chen

Abstract

The presentation is based upon a paper, in which we examine how industrial robots have shaped employment patterns in nine European countries: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Italy and United Kingdom. We find that robots reduced employment in the manufacturing sector in all countries in our sample. The impact of robots on total employment in local labour markets, however, is more ambiguous. While local labour markets experienced significant employment losses in Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom, we find no statistically significant impact of robots on employment in France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Spain. In most of these countries job losses were seemingly offset by employment gains in other sectors of the economy.
