Title: Technological Change, Skills and Labour Market Outcomes

By Prof. Dr. Tomas Korpi (Stockholm University)

Abstract:

Technological change is once again transforming European labor markets, and computerization, robotization and artificial intelligence is often said to eliminate certain occupations as well as change the skills required by employers within occupations. The possibility of mass-automation of certain work tasks could thus make some occupations redundant. Likewise, new ways of organizing work are for instance often said to demand social skills such as teamwork and communication, rather than technical knowhow. Such changes would in turn imply that historical patterns of labor market success and failure may change, and that policies may need to be adopted.

This policy meeting will discuss these developments against the backdrop of analyses carried out within Work Package 2 of the Technequality-project. The analyses have focused on the importance of family background, educational attainment and cognitive and non-cognitive skills for success on selected European labor markets. This policy meeting will discuss the results from these analyses and their implications for traditional views of labor market selection and success as well as for public policy.
